CoolKatakolon

My husband and I were in Katakolon in July 2005 on the WIndspirit. We did not sign up for the ship's tour to Olympia and were initially disappointed we had not. When we first got off the ship and began walking there were taxi's waiting for hire to go to Olympia. We waved them off in a friendly manner... As we walked down the street we quickly realized there really wasn't much to do or see here. We neared the park, ready to cross the street to go back and there was one taxi driver with his new Volkswagen Passat, beckoning us to "tour Olympia" with him. Oh, sure we thought. But, he seemed pleasant enough and we weren't so keen on spending the day on the ship. So we went over and talked to him.

What a treat our day with George turned out to be. He took us to Olympia, waited for us while we toured the ruins and museum on our own, and was waiting for us in his cool, air-conditioned car. We then went to the town of Olympia for lunch/iced coffee and again on our own did some shopping. Then he took us back to our ship, the long way as requested, so we could see some of the countryside. It was all for a set price, so the more we could see and do, the better. And it turned out less expensive than the ship's tour price!

When we returned to the ship the people from the ship's tour were all disappointed with the excursion, for varying reasons. But mostly because for such a large group (nothing I'm sure compared to large cruise ships) there was a lot of waiting around. Because it was so hot, people ended up sitting for a lengthy time in the bus. The beauty of our touring with George was the timing was set by us, not others.

We are leaving in April on the Royal Princess for 12 nights and I am setting up, inadvance, our own excursions for Istanbul and Sorrento (Amalfi Coast). I will try to steer away from shore excursions on large buses with large amount of people...I may be missing some things, but gaining alot too.

I got George's card and his email is:
georgetaxi@panafonet.gr. At least it was in 2005.

Have fun!

DefaultPrivate taxi/tour of Olympia

I just finished booking a tour with George Letsios for our May visit to Katakolon on the Noordam. He seems very professional and has quickly replied to all of my e-mails. Based on other member's reviews I think we will have an excellent tour with George. His new e-mail is
georgetaxi@vodafone.net.gr and his website is www.taxikatakolon.gr

I will post a review when we return in May.

We just returned from our cruise on the Noordam. We hired George Letisios. He is a taxi driver with excellent English who will drive you to Olympia wait for you to tour the ruins and museum and then take you to the town for shopping or to eat. We bought delicious baklava and George drove us to an amphitheater with a fabulous view where we ate it. We then went to his home. It was nice to have the personal touch. We met his wife and daughter. They gave us beautiful roses from their yard to put in our cabin. We enjoy meeting people when we travel and it was neat to see how real Greeks live. George gave us a lot of information along the ride. His car was clean and comfortable. The ruins and museum were very well done and not to be missed. If you want to enjoy the scenery instead of watching the road I highly recommend George. His website is www.taxikatakolon.gr

We have booked George for our upcoming Zuiderdam cruise in May. He has been very helpful in the booking process and very prompt in his email responses to my questions. He also seems open to suggestions of other things to do in conjunction with our tour to Olympia. The winery sounds great. Is it on the way to/from Olympia?

Yes, we did go to Olympia. Yes, it was pretty much a bunch of fallen stones, and yes, it was worth it. It was pretty cool to see the actual sight, but you only need about an hour to do it. The museum was fairly interesting, too, but that is also quick. The town of Olympia was very cute, as well. Lots of little shops, cafes, etc. We had a fantastic driver/guide, so it really made for a fun day. Once we left the ruins, we went into town and had a drink and walked around for a bit. Then, George took us around the countryside, and to some fairly new amphitheatre. Afterwards, he took us to his house where we met his wife. Then, we went back towards Katakolon, via another very pretty route and went to a very local place for lunch. After lunch George drove us along the beach area and then back to town. The town is cute, typical shopping and cafes. It was a very good day -- one of the best we had (although, it's really to hard to say which port was really the best as they were all fun.)

We used George last year and he was great!!

I have an 8 year old so we didn't go to the winery but we did go to Olympia and a couple of the Villages. We also had time to go to the beach and have lunch at a local restaurant.

Don't hesitate in booking with George.

If you have an specific questions, please let me know.

George is very open to other ideas. Since I have a young son we were looking for "kid" friendly activities so he took me to his house where they have chickens, kittens and puppies. This was a great break for my son after having been at Olympia for a couple of hours. It was so cute, George's daughter is about my son's age and they hit off great even though they couldn't speak the same language. We ended up inviting the little girl to go to the beach with us and the two kids had so much fun. My son was sad to say goodbye to her when it was time to go back to the ship.

I can't say enough nice things about George and his family, really great people!!
